Sandy Hook Lighthous  some more info on later years.  The Sandy Hook Visitor Center is where the public can explore the history of the lighthouse. The history of that is that it was a former U.S Life-Saving Station. The U.S Life-Saving Station was crewmembers that rescued people and victims of shipwrecks in the 19th century. The United States Army made changes to Sandy Hook during a war in 1812. Later on after they fortified Sandy Hook they tested weapons at the Sandy Hook Proving Ground. Almost a century ago, Fort Hancock and its gun batteries where built to protect the harbor and protecting New York City to prevent attack from the sea. This fort continued its role through out the year but later adding an anti-aircraft defense also in the 1950’s Nike Air Defense Missals. This lighthouse defended a part of the Gateway National Recreation Area.

In 1777 the men of our great nation fought for our freedom over 200 years ago. It all started with a few people’s ideas for freedom. They protested, wrote the Declaration of Independence and made a new government. Events happening today can be connected to things that happened in the Revolutionary War. In Libya, the people are protesting against their government, for change. In the 1700's the colonists started to protest against taxes and the government. Today, we are dealing with the situation of being heavily taxed like them. In our government, compromises are made like they were back then when dealing with the writing of the Constitution.
